What are penalty points?

The penalty points system for driving offences has operated in Ireland since 2002. Penalty points are used to enforce the rules of the road, with the aim to improve driver behaviour and road safety. If you commit a driving offence, the penalty points will be added to your driving licence record to show that you are guilty of the offence. Driving offences include speeding, not wearing a seatbelt or using your mobile phone while driving. Penalty points can be applied on both full licences and learner permits.

How long will penalty points stay on my driving record?

Penalty points will remain on your driving record for 3 years and must be reported to your insurance company when applying for car insurance. Also, please note that any period where your licence is out of date does not count as part of the 3 years.

Disqualified from driving

If you accumulate 12 penalty points you will be disqualified. Drivers on a learner permit have a lower threshold of seven penalty points before disqualification.
